Wilson Ignores Another Hanks TantrumSurprise Controversy Hits Oscar Competition - 3/12/01

Reuters - A Best Supporting Actor Nomination for "Wilson", played by V. B. Mikasa in the Movie "Cast Away", was allegedly dropped due to gender indeterminacy. The public relations firm representing 20th Century Fox Studios has distributed a press release stating their intention to sue the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences based on information obtained from an anonymous inside source claiming that the actor portraying the character "Wilson" in the film "Cast Away" received more "Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role" votes than Benicio Del Toro (Traffic) and Albert Finney (Erin Brockovitch) combined, but was dropped from the slate because "It can't compete against the male actors because it lacks a penis, and it can't compete against the female actors because it lacks talent. It is, after all, just a volleyball".

When contacted, V. B. Mikasa, the volleyball that played Wilson in the motion picture, replied, "I've spent my life getting knocked around. I'm used to it. I've finally gotten myself out of an abusive situation, and followed my dreams to Hollywood. What I already have, they can't take away from me."

Mikasa at the Premier of SnatchAbout the trials of being sexless athletic equipment in the glamourous world of Hollywood, Mikasa had to say, "I get up early in the morning just like any other actor, and sit in the makup chair for hours getting my Mikasa logo covered up and a Wilson tattoo applied. I've weathered my share of prima donna tirades from Hanks. He's jealous that I've never missed a cue, a mark or a line. This kind of bitterness can lead to personal vendettas. It's no surprise that my nomination was squashed."

Asked whether he had any concerns about future roles, Mikasa replied, "I've wanted to play a volleyball from the other side of the tracks since I got into acting, and being able to play a cheap Wilson fulfilled my dream beyond all hopes. I sometimes think I'll always be typecast as a Wilson, though, and end up doing gritty urban volleyball dramas, but then I get a call from Mel Brooks wanting me to play a hockey puck and I know I'll be all right."

Leather Advocacy groups such as League for the Advancement of Fetish Films (LAFF) and the Center for Overweight Workmen (COW) hail the lawsuit as a watershed event for genderless leather items everywhere. "We feel it's high time that leather objects find their equal place in the public eye," a spokesman for LAFF said. "The more we express our natural inclination for appreciation of leather products, the healthier our society will be as a [whole]."

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences had no comment.

Glamour!Two Weeks to "Go Time"... - 3/12/01

I've managed to do a lot in the past weekend to make up for the fact that I did next to nothing in the previous three weeks. Lucky you.

Now available:
  • Registration: If you have not registered yet, you need to in order to choose your picks in each category.
  • Login: Once you have registered, you can log in to pick your winners in each Oscar category.
  • Navigation: I've replaced the cheez-it text navigation links on the left with fancy graphical approximations of the same thing. I'm particularly proud of the fading background. This is the kind of thing that looks particularly crappy on a 16 or 256 color monitor, but, shucky-darns, it looks fine in 16K colors or higher.
The tension is palpable!Links to Official Web Sites available. - 2/22/01

Now, when looking at the nominations page, one can click the film icon to see the official web site for each movie. I was able to find sites for a majority of the films, but some are just summaries found at movies.go.com.

I also created the animated film gif (), as I was not particularly pleased with the static film frame image ().

I've also done a lot of work on the registration process, and as soon as one can save and edit ones Oscar picks in the database, I'll make the registration module public. An auto e-mail response is now sent (working) when one successfully registers.

Progress so far... - 2/19/01

Having had a nice long weekend. Plenty of time to get a lot done to the site. Accomplished absolutely nothing.

The Nominations are in. - 2/15/01

Of course, the nominations have been out since 2/13, but what with the plague and all, I have been unable to load them into the database until now. You can check out the nominations at the Nominations Page.

It looks a little bland now, but I intend to spice it up so that it will show the winner in each category, once a winner is selected of course. I'm good, but I'm not that good.

Next up, Partygoer registration. Anyone have any alternate word for the term partygoer? I need something classy, snazzy, cool, hip. How about hipster?

Another idea that may be WAY off the mark. Once the votes start to roll in, for those who are willing to part with a little extra lucre, would be able to see a histogram of existing votes for a particular problem category. The money would go into the cost of running the party of course, and the cost would be prohibitive enough to keep everybody from buying all categories and having a massive block of unified voting. Whether or not this goes up for sale, it would be interesting to have these stats available on Oscar Night as they are about to choose a category, we could have demographics on East Coast vs. West Coast picks, and Cash vs. Golden Ken picks. Hmmmm...

The Oscars Party is almost upon us. - 2/14/01

Naturally there is a lot of work to do here at the official website of Ian and Colleen's annual Oscars Bash. But as features become available, partygoers will be notified.

The intended functionality of the site will include partygoer registration, allowing each person to designate their choices of winners (or losers, see Golden Ken) in each category. On the night of the festivities, standings will be updated live to allow for instantaneous view of who's in the running for the super bonus grand prize.

In parallel with Ian and Colleen's East Coast Bash will be Maura and Tim's West Coast Bash which will also be managed by this site and look for a web cam link to bring both parties together.

Work still to do:
  • Finish raw interface work
  • Provide listing of Nominations
  • Create partygoer registration page
  • Create parygoer choice management page
  • Create reports of standings
  • List of rules
  • Directions to party locations
  • News and Links to allow partygoers to make optimal choices in their quest for the cup!
Any comments/suggestions/feedback should be directed to Rob Rohr, though as he's recuperating from the plague, do not expect instantaneous response.
